In todays' technological age, portable electronic devices are everywhere. They range in price from $50-$600 and can do almost anything a home computer can do.

Are these right for children? Probably not. You stand to lose a lot of money and maybe even personal information if one of these devices gets misplaced.

There are however, ebook readers that only do one thing. Read ebooks. These aren't very expensive and don't have many bells and whistles but they are great at what they do. These can be found on sites like Ebay.

One of the older ebook reading devices is the Franklin eBookMan. These do run about $150.00 but are very sturdy and are easy to use. Even a 4 year old could use an eBookMan just fine.

They do have some special features that make them a lot like any typical PDA. This could be overkill for a child but might work for a teenager.

There are many more out there also. Sony has one of the coolest ebook reading devices available. It has easy to read text and is very sturdy.

The best bet for children is still by far the home computer. It's very difficult to damage and you already have one. If you decide you want to get any type of ebook reading device, make sure your child is old enough to use it properly and it won't get broken.

What really makes children's ebooks great is the amount of special features many of them come with. Of course not all of them do, but by searching around you will find some that have sound effects, music, pictures, even video to go along with the text.

Some children's ebooks even double as audiobooks and you can follow along as it is read to you.

Sound effects might sound odd for books but there is no better place to have them. If lighting crashes in a certain part of the book, it can have a small sound icon for your child to click and it will play lighting and thunder sounds. This really appeals to many young readers and can be a lot of fun with silly books.

Music and songs are sometimes featured in children's ebooks. This works especially well if it is a well known story with a famous song in it. Disney ebooks often feature all kinds of music and songs.

One of the coolest features that some children's ebooks have is video. Sure pictures are nice but to see a ship rocking on the water instead of standing still can make a big difference.
When something important happens in the ebook, there might be a video that accompanies it and has a little replay of what was just read too.

One of the great things about children's ebooks is that they are pretty much indestructible. It's frustrating to go buy your child a $18.00 hardback book only to find it a week later covered in play doh or half eaten by the child or an animal in the house.

Many children with attention deficit disorder have improved their ability to pay attention with ebooks. Some children just can't pay attention to a standard book but when they are at a computer or other multimedia device, they have an easier time.

This is because reading a standard book is a passive activity but clicking a mouse to change pictures and flip pages is much more active.

Some children are just resistant to reading period. They just don't want anything to do with sitting and reading a book and won't let you read them one.
