Childrens Books - How to Find Good Books For Your Child to Read

By Annalaura Brown

Are you having a hard time finding good children’s books for your children to read that are uplifting and the kind of books you would be proud for them to read.

Here are some ideas and guidelines for your consideration :
  1. Is it a classic book? That is how long has it been in publication and has it stood the test of time? If it is a new book, is the author already well known? Or is it a new author?
  2. Has it won any awards? Some common ones to look for include the Newberry medal and the Caldecott medal.
  3. What are others saying about the book? Can you find some good detailed reviews on the book?
  4. What kind of values is the book teaching your child? This can be difficult to determine but usually reading it yourself first will be a good indicator.
  5. Is it age appropriate? For some books this is quite obvious but with others you may have to read the introduction and publishers notes.
  6. If you are looking for a more detailed guide, try looking in the book “Honey for the Child’s Heart.” This reading guide is full of suggested reading lists and practical advice on how to choose quality books for your child to read.
  7. Has it made it on the best seller list? This is not always an indication of anything but it can at least give you an idea of its popularity.
  8. What is the background on the author? Is the author from a Christian background or from an otherwise clean and good taste background? This information can often be found by simply entering his or her name into Google and reading the results that appear.
  9. Another idea is to visit the American Library Associations website at http://ala.org and to look at their recent reviews and awards of childrens’ books. They often have useful and helpful information for finding great books for your children to read.
  10. Lastly, know that even though it can be challenging, it is possible and well worth while to spend some time doing your homework in order to find uplifting and inspirational books for your child to read.

Children Reading

Children Reading - Multimedia Ebooks For Children

Though much harder to find than regular ebooks, multimedia ebooks for children can be a lot of fun for children of all ages. A multimedia ebook will have all kinds of cool features a standard ebook will not.

They could have a CD that accompanies them or could be on the CD themselves. These are usually ordered from the Internet instead of downloaded but you can find a few places that will have them available for download.

The difference between a multimedia ebook and a regular ebook is that your child can interact with and sometimes even change the story. This turns passive reading into something much more active.

When you get a multimedia ebook, it will either be on a CD or come as an executable or .EXE file. This is because it is more of a program than a document. Many of these ebooks allow multiple people to use them and have an area to input your name.

Some multimedia ebooks will allow your child to have his name or even his picture put into the actual story. This may require some adult assistance but can be a lot of fun.

It can really encourage a young reader to get involved with books if they are a part of the story.

Multimedia ebooks can be more expensive than regular ebooks and can be hard to find as well. Some retailers will have them in the computer software aisle but your best bet is to check with bookstores on the Internet or Ebay.

Children Educational

Children Educational - Free Ebooks For Children

Ebooks are very popular all over the Internet. They are used to promote products, in marketing, and often are distributed for free by the author.

Many aspiring novelists who have been rejected time and time again turn to the world of ebooks to distribute their material. It's not rejected due to low quality but sometimes publishers just avoid a certain genre if it isn't popular.

Many up and coming children's book writers have discovered that by distributing a free ebook or two, their name recognition may improve and sometimes publishers will just contact them first.

There are all kinds of places to get free ebooks for children. Just using any of your favorite search engines should get you a lot of results.

Some sites that have these free ebooks are religious in nature, educational, or privately developed. Sometimes if you join a kids club online, you will receive free children's ebooks in your e-mail on a weekly or monthly basis.

Many sites will have you register with them before you can download any free children's ebooks. This is usually pretty safe but before you do, make sure to read the fine print.

You don't want to have your inbox filled with garbage forever. There is rarely a subscription fee for these free ebook sites because the authors usually give everything away.

Before you sit your child down at the computer or with their personal ebook reader, make sure you flip through most of the pages. Odds are everything is how it should be, but as in any industry there are always one or two bad apples out there.

Also read an abstract of the story so you will know if any important characters are going to die as that can be hard on children.

These make up a majority of what children like to read since they often can't sit still long enough for something longer. The best type of ebook for your child really depends on their needs and interests.

Educational ebooks for children are very popular. Since the .PDF format is used quite a bit for ebooks, they allow the use of pictures and hyperlinks. This way if your child is learning about space, there may be links to useful websites like NASA and a lot of interesting pictures to keep your child's attention.

Where To Find Children's Ebooks

The Internet is a huge and wonderful place that is full of information of all kinds. Children's ebooks are booming and becoming more and more popular as portable technology gets better.

It's now possible to get a portable ebook reader that can hold over 100 novels and some game devices like the PSP enable you to read ebooks on them.

Where do you find these ebooks though? Well, they are becoming so popular that most online bookstores have an ebook section.

Amazon, Ebay, and many more are great places to check. Barnes and Noble used to have a great ebook selection but closed that area down.

Many of your children's favorite novels are available as ebooks and the prices are very reasonable. The popular series Eragon may cost $22.95 for a hardcover edition but the same novel in ebook form is about $8.00.

This has many benefits. The most obvious one is that it can't be destroyed. Unless you reformat your computer, that ebook will be with you forever.

You can download it to personal ebook readers as well. Harry Potter, Goosebumps, and many popular children's stories are all out there waiting to be read.

Many of these sites will require you to register with them and you can choose whether or not to receive e-mail from these sites. If your child is an avid reader of ebooks, it might be beneficial to subscribe to their "What's New" newsletters.

This can keep you and your child informed about when the next book in a series is going to be released and might even recommend books of a similar nature.

Ebook Readers For Children

Well, even if you have found a great selection of ebooks for your child, there is still one problem. Not all computers come with the software needed to open these files!

Not all companies release their ebooks in the same format, but many of them will offer you a couple different format choices.

The easiest format to use and manipulate is the PDF format. This is a format developed by Adobe Acrobat which sometimes comes pre-installed on computers.

Most textbooks for online colleges come in this format. It is very easy to use and completely free unless you want to use the very advanced options.

If you have a Palm Pilot, Pocket PC, or handheld Windows device, you can use iSilo Reader. Unfortunately, this only offers you a 14 day free trial before you have to purchase it.

Mobipocket Reader is a great alternative to this because you get a 14 day free trial but you can use it for free even after it expires. You just don't have access to advanced features.

Obviously, these different types of reader programs will vary depending on your preferred device. Even a Sony PSP can be used for ebooks as well as a blackberry.

Many people don't feel comfortable letting children use any of these handheld devices because they can be quite pricey. It can be a lot easier to just let the children use your desktop or laptop PC and you can even keep track of how many pages they read in a certain time. This is a great option for homework.
